Madonna Debuts Three Tracks on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs Chart

http://madonnabbarchives.blogspot.com/2014/12/madonna-debuts-three-tracks-on-hot.html
billboard.com

A trio of tracks from her upcoming 'Rebel Heart' album debut days after their arrival.

Madonna catapults onto Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart with three tracks from her upcoming Rebel Heart album: "Bitch I'm Madonna" (No. 14), "Living for Love" (No. 16) and "Unapologetic Bitch" (No. 26).

The songs, available for instant download upon pre-ordering the album (due March 10) or as a la carte purchases, were made available digitally in a surprise move at midnight on Friday (Dec. 19), following massive demo leaks earlier in the week. (An additional 14 demos leaked on Dec. 23.) The songs soar onto the chart, therefore, on the strength of only a partial week of sales and with only small benefits from other metrics (streaming, radio airplay and club play).

The cuts mark Madonna's first entries on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, which premiered on Jan. 26, 2013.

Bow Down

I could barely sleep last night after downloading the six songs from REBEL HEART, Madonna's upcoming, sure-to-be-amazing album. I can barely deal with all the FLAWLESSNESS!! (That cover is gorgeous!) I don't have to say much about the music, you've all heard it. I love the direction she went in, hopefully some of the other leaked demos make it onto the album

LIVING FOR LOVE is apparently the first single (or buzz single?), it's not 100% clear, though Madonna did say in her statement last night that she originally planned for it to be the first single released on Valentine's Day. Of course, with the leak, she had to rush something out. At this point, she could change her mind about the first single when the album is officially launched.

Behold...The New Era is here!

Billboard.com: 'Bedtime Stories' Turns 20

from billboard.com

Twenty years ago this month, Madonna released her sixth studio album, Bedtime Stories, a classic that came out at a strange crossroads in her career.

While Madonna certainly didn't lack for fame in 1994, the button-pushing Erotica album had soured many critics and fans. For the first time in a decade of superstardom, people weren't shocked by her antics anymore -- even worse, they often seemed exhausted by her.

Artistically speaking, she'd spent the last four years challenging and subverting America's sexual puritanism. But after releasing an entire book called Sexfeaturing nude pictures of herself and other celebrities, there didn't seem to be anywhere else to go in that realm.

New Album

Madonna has been teasing us mercilessly on her Instagram account for the past several months while she has been hard at work in the studio working on her upcoming album. Are you as excited as I am?! While the new music is the definitely the most important thing, I think it's safe to say that we are all also eager to see how this album and its singles perform on the Billboard charts. Madonna's been out of the scene for a few years and things seem to change to much so fast these days. What do we think, will we get at least another Hot 100 Top 10 Hit? Maybe a few more Club Play #1's? Will she still be able to reign the dance charts as she always has? Will we get more than 2 or 3 singles? So many questions! It seems more likely that the album will be released sometime early next year. Can we possibly wait that long?

Madonna Confirms New Album Plans

Madonna has confirmed that plans for her next album are already in the works and that her collaborators are top secret.

Thank goodness! If I have to hear any more about fitness gyms, clothing, fragrance, skin care or Art For Freedom I'm going to go INSANE!

Flashback: "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" Article, Billboard Magazine (Issue Date: January 25, 1997)

Here's an article from Billboard magazine which talks about the dance remix and subsequent single release of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina". I found it interesting for a couple of reasons:

1. The article confirms that Warner Bros. were this close to not releasing a physical single in the USA for this song. Well, this wouldn't have been the first time they made that mistake ("Into The Groove", anyone?) Although we finally did get a maxi, it should be pointed out that the USA didn't get a 2-Track CD or Cassette Single (cassettes were still very popular in 1997). Extra sales of these 2 formats could have pushed "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" into the Top 5 of the Hot 100 back then (the song peaked at #8).

2. The article pretty much confirms that Warner Bros. sometimes sucked at getting high chart positions for Madonna because they were more interested in album sales."...We're interested in selling albums, not singles. Warner traditionally doesn't play singles games. We're not interested in putting out a single and losing money just to get a chart position."

I found that statement quite shocking. While it has been generally known among fans and chart watchers that Warner Bros. were sometimes really bad at timing Madonna's airplay and sales to result in a higher Hot 100 position (sometimes they waited too long to release physical singles, most notably with singles like "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", "Rescue Me","Ray of Light", "Nothing Really Matters"...), who knew that they basically almost didn't really care? At this point I'm amazed that we even got physical releases throughout Madonna's career with WB. I have to compare this to the likes of Mariah Carey, who's team always seemed to have been on point with a game plan for her  chart positions. They knew what they were doing, that's why Mariah has so many #1 hits. I've always thought that if Warner Bros. put had put in the same effort in the chart strategy of Madonna's singles throughout her career, not only would she have overall higher placings here and there (she has so many #2 hits, can you image how many of them could have been #1 if Warner had been more aggressive?), but I also really do believe that Madonna could still have been the female artist with the most #1 hits right now. The quality of Madonna's songs pushed them as far as they could go but a little nudge here and there with strategy would have helped as well. Just something to think about.

Happy 2014

Hey everyone, just wanted to drop in and say Happy New Year to everyone. I know it's been quiet on the blog for a while, but rest assured, I am still around! The blog still gets a good amount of daily views, so that's good. I'm glad you guys still use it as a resource. I know, I still need to complete some of the Video Charts entries...I've been too lazy to do it :P

As I'm sure you're all aware, "new album rumors" have started up again and word on the street is that Madonna is looking at a late 2014 release. Patrick Leonard's name has also been thrown around as a possible collaborator. That would definitely be a welcome return as far as I'm concerned. Is any of this true? Who knows. It's all speculation at this point. All I know is that I can't wait for some new music from Madonna. Hopefully, new music means new chart action. We need another Top 10 hit and Number 1 album! Hope I don't jinx it.

Stay warm and look forward to the Spring.
