MADONNA RULES BILLBOARD.COM'S READERS POLL 2012

Archive Update: The Santa Baby Confusion

A correction has been made to Santa Baby's run on the Hot Holiday Songs chart. Apparently, the track has spent 3 non-consecutive weeks on the chart, not 1 as previously stated. The first two weeks are currently unknown. If anyone has this info, please let me know!

Thanks to JohnnyT for pointing this out!

Update
Contributor Maurice Gravelle has a possible theory on the "Santa Baby" Holiday confusion:

[Billboard.biz] states Santa Baby charted for 3 weeks on Hot Holiday Songs and peaked at #24 ... previously, Santa Baby peaked at #24 for only 1 week on 2 charts: Hot 100 Singles Recurrent (2002) and Adult Contemporary Holiday Tracks (2003). So I'm wondering if both these entries were not combined into the Hot Holiday Songs chart??? and then it re-entered at #49, so that would make it 3 weeks total. It's hard to say.

It's certainly a possibility, and it kind of makes sense, especially since the track peaked at #24 on all  3 charts. Until we get confirmation, we'll just keep all the charts as separate.

"Superstar" Brazilian CD Single News

After months of speculation, it is now confirmed that an exclusive CD single of "Superstar" will be released tomorrow for free in Brazil's "Folha de São Paulo" newspaper. The CD will include the album version plus a remix by Eddie Amador, who has previously remixed "Give It 2 Me". The cover was chosen by Madonna from a list of 10 contenders.

Chart News: Week Of 12/8/2012

As Madonna's MDNA Tour plays it's final dates in South America, it's looking more and more likely that all promo for MDNA is now completely over. No more singles, no club play promos...not even any news of that supposed Brazilian release for "Superstar". It's a little sad, but eventually all things come to an end (although I really think they could have milked one more Club Play #1 out of this album!). Now we can look forward to the tour DVD and Madonna's next album, which she supposedly has already started working on (Maybe she's just started thinking about it. Who knows!)

MDNA falls down to #16 this week on the Dance / Electronic Albums chart in its 35th week.

DANCE / ELECTRONIC ALBUMS: #16 (Down from #14)

Hot Tours: Madonna Enjoys Fifth No. 1 Since Launch Of MDNA Tour

Madonna claims the No. 1 ranking on the weekly tally of Hot Tours for the fifth time since the launch of her blockbuster MDNA Tour that has been playing concert venues in Europe and North America since the end of May. Ticket revenue reported during the past week surpasses the $60 million mark from performances that occurred during October and November in 18 U.S. cities. With two-show runs at venues in Seattle, San Jose, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Houston, St. Paul and New York City, the overall attendance count from six weeks of concerts totals 336,386.

With $233 million already logged from 74 shows and a string of stadium performances scheduled in South American cities through December 22, the MDNA Tour is on track to potentially rank among the 10 top-grossing tours of all time. Madonna¹s top-grossing tour so far is Sticky & Sweet Tour (2008-2009) that generated more than $407 million in ticket sales and ranks fourth all-time on the Boxscore tally.

Madonna Celebrates 30th Anniversary On Billboard Charts

Who's that girl celebrating her 30th anniversary on Billboard charts today? Madonna.

Thirty years ago today, on Nov. 6, 1982, Madonna made her Billboard chart debut, entering the Dance/Club Play Songs tally at No. 40 with "Everybody." Since then, our charts and pop music have never been the same.

"Everybody" was Madonna's first single for Sire/Warner Bros. and the first of an amazing 60 hits on the Dance/Club Play Songs chart (so far) for the diva.

Here is a look at a few of the entertainer's amazing Billboard chart feats through the years:

The single will also feature remixes by top Brazilian DJ's. No word yet on any kind of USA release or how this special single will be distributed.

Chart News: Week of 11/3/2012

It's an uneventful chart week as MDNA falls off the Billboard 200 and Top Current Albums charts again. It also slides down a few notches to #14 on the Dance Electronic Albums chart.

BILLBOARD 200: OFF (From #181)
TOP CURRENT ALBUMS: OFF (From #161)
DANCE / ELECTRONIC ALBUMS: #14 (Down from #9)

I'd love to see some more singles chart action again soon! There are still rumors floating around about "Superstar" being the next single. According to our blog poll, however, "Love Spent", "Gang Bang", and "I'm Addicted" are your Top 3 favorite choices to be the follow-up release, and I have to agree. I think any of those choices would be much better!

Ask Billboard: "Luvin' MDNA"

Hi Gary,

I'm an avid Madonna fan, have been since her debut. I've noticed that her latest album, "MDNA," has re-entered the Billboard 200 a couple of times recently, surely due to her touring the U.S. I'm curious to know exactly how many units it has sold and how it compares to her three prior albums: "American Life" (2003), "Confessions on a Dance Floor" (2005) and "Hard Candy" (2008). I truly believe that "MDNA" is a brilliant album and is suffering in sales due to poor singles choices and little radio airplay. I have not heard one track off the set on any top 40 radio station.

Thanks,

John O'Sullivan
Sacramento, California

Hi John,

I agree that "MDNA" is likely underrated, with "Love Spent" a potential hit that, sadly, may never get its chance as a single. "Give Me All Your Luvin' " and "Girl Gone Wild" peaked at Nos. 24 and 38, respectively, on Pop Songs. Third single "Turn Up the Radio" looks unlikely to chart. (Perhaps "Superstar" might?)

Madonna's current tour has seemingly spurred sales. Three weeks ago, as Madonna toured the East Coast, "MDNA" was No. 94 on the Billboard 200 - but No. 21 in Boston and No. 29 in New York, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

This week, "MDNA" re-enters the Billboard 200 at No. 181. The set has sold 512,000, trailing "Hard Candy" (744,000), "Confessions" (1.7 million) and "Life" (680,000). (Remember, though, that "MDNA" has been out for six months and sales were heftier earlier in the 2000s).

Video Charts Section

Just a heads up that I've added a Video Charts section to the blog and I'll be updating it over time with Madonna's video releases. Some of these stats are already on some of the other singles or albums pages (for example: The Confessions Tour, Sticky & Sweet Tour, What It Feels Like For A Girl DVD single, etc), but they will eventually be moved into the video section with their own pages.

Update On MDNA's Sales

MDNA sold 2,659 copies last week (Billboard Issue Dated October 27, 2012) compared to 1,401 copies the week before, for an increase of 90%. MDNA's total sales currently stand at 511,821 copies sold.

UPDATE: Billboard confirms sales of 512,000 (approximate). Source

Chart News: Week Of 10/27/2012

Good news today as MDNA makes another re-entry on the Billboard 200 at #181 (its 13th week on the chart), no doubt aided by the West coast leg of the MDNA tour. The album also re-enteres Top Current albums at #161, and climbs up to #9 on Dance / Electronic Albums.

My MDNA Los Angeles Show (10/10/12) Review (Updated with videos)

As I eagerly awaited for the doors to the Staples Center to open at 7:00 pm, the anxiety of securing a good spot in the Golden Triangle was starting to build up in me. All I wanted was to be in the front of the main stage! I looked at all the people around me and wondered how many of them had Golden Triangle tickets. All I knew was that I was going to run all the way down to the floor to try to get the best spot: Front Row, Center! More and more people started lining up and finally, at 7:00 pm on the dot, the woman inside gave the guy outside the go-ahead and he opened the door in front of me. I already had my phone and keys in hand, ready to throw in the plastic bucket as I went through the metal detector. Luckily, it didn't beep and as I was stepping through I asked the woman what the fastest way to the Golden Triangle was. She pointed straight ahead and said "You can take aisle 14". I saw the sign up ahead. Aisle 14! I started RUNNING. Earlier, I had said to my boyfriend Jonathan  "don't be upset if I don't wait for you, I'll save you a spot!" He understood. As I entered the doorway of aisle 14 and started racing down the stairs, I realized that my heart was beating fast.

As I was about halfway down I looked at the golden triangle up ahead and realized that not a single person was inside yet! I could hear a couple of the employees telling me to slow down, but I could also hear people running behind me so I kept running, but just then I realized that my legs were shaking so much that I had to hold on to the railing as I ran. I flashed my wristband at every attendant I passed, and finally I reached the Golden Triangle entrance, showed my wristband to one last person, made a mad dive for the front center area of the stage and gripped it with my hands. A few seconds later, people rushed to my left and right, and eventually, the entire front row was filled. Luckily, my boyfriend was able to squeeze in next to me. We had secured our spots. Front row center! I couldn't believe it!

Chart News: Week Of 10/20/2012

After a 3-week re-entry, MDNA falls off the Billboard 200 Albums Chart this week from last week's #142 position. It also falls off the Top Current Albums chart and falls down to #12 on the Dance / Electronic Albums chart. Elsewhere, "Turn Up The Radio" falls off the Club Play chart after an 11-week stay.

"Superstar" Remixes In The Works?

Continuing with the rumors about "Superstar" possibly being the next single from MDNA, Drowned Madonna is reporting that official remixes of the song have been completed by Bimbo Jones and Eddie Amador. If true, it's interesting that Interscope are even bothering with a fourth release since "Turn Up The Radio" isn't really doing much on the radio, unless perhaps this will just be a club-only release. But if that were the case, one would think they would have gone with either "Gang Bang" or "I'm Addicted" instead. Could a remixed "Superstar" be Madonna's next Club Play #1 hit?

Flashback: 30 Years Ago Today...

On October 6th, 1982, Sire Records released a 12" vinyl of Madonna's very first single, "Everybody". While the song wouldn't go on to set the charts on fire, it was an important stepping stone into what would become a legendary music career. "Everybody" marked Madonna's very first appearance on any Billboard chart when it debuted on the Dance/Disco chart (now known as the Club Play chart) on November 6, 1982, a chart in which she still dominates even today!

"I was living on the Upper West Side, 99th and Riverside, and about 7:00 at night I had the radio on in my bedroom, on WKTU, and I heard 'Everybody'. I said 'Oh, my God, that's me coming out of that box.' It was an amazing feeling." —Madonna

"Everybody" would go on to peak at #7 on the Bubbling Under chart on January 22, 1983.

Dance and sing, get up and do your thing! Give "Everybody" a few spins today in celebration :)

MDNA Tour: North American Box Scores Part 1

The first round of box scores for the North American leg of the MDNA tour have finally been released, and they look good! All shows have been sold out so far. Here are the figures:

Saturday, September 29, 2012

Billboard.biz: 'MDNA Rises'

Madonna: Her "MDNA" album continues to climb on the Billboard 200 after it reentered the tally a week ago, owed to sales generated by the buzz of her MDNA Tour reaching the U.S.

This week "MDNA" rises 140-94 with 5,000 sold. The bulk of those sales came from CDs sold via either Internet retailers like Amazon.com, through mail order or at the venues where her MDNA concerts were held. Most of those sales seem to be sparked by her tour stops along the east coast, in cities like Boston, New York and Atlantic City.

For example, while "MDNA" is the No. 94 selling album overall on the Billboard 200 (reflecting across the entire U.S.), it was actually the No. 21-selling set in Boston and the No. 29-seller in New York City.

Flashback: Billboard Magazine Music Of The 80's Poll

In the Dec 23rd, 1989 issue of Billboard magazine, a poll ballot was included where they asked the public to vote for their favorite artists, songs and albums of the 1980's. The "Music of the 80's" poll results were published in the May 26th, 1990 issue of Billboard and the following were Madonna's results:

Pop Artists of the Decade: #1
Pop Albums of the Decade: Like A Virgin #5
Dance Artists of the Decade: #1
Dance Singles of the Decade: "Into The Groove" #1
Dance Singles of the Decade: "Like A Virgin" #5
Adult Contemporary Artists of the Decade: #2

Thanks to Maurice Gravelle for this info! It has now been added to the Year-End section.

"Turn Up The Radio" On The Club Play Chart, Week 11

In its 11th (and most likely final) week on the Club Play chart (Issue dated October 13, 2012), "Turn Up The Radio" falls from #27 to #43. I'd say it's time for Interscope to get some promo mixes of "Gang Bang" or "I'm Addicted" going!

From Billboard.biz:

Madonna: The diva's MDNA album reenters the chart at No. 140, crosses the half-million mark this week and earns a 106% sales gain (3,000 sold for the week). Her MDNA tour started its U.S. and Canada leg recently, thus helping to spark the album to its best sales frame since May.

So there it is! Confirmation that MDNA finally hits the 500,000 sales mark, and is most definitely eligible for Gold certification!

"Turn Up The Radio" On The Club Play Chart, Week 10

"Superstar" As The Fourth Single?

According to MTV Brazil, "Superstar" will be the fourth single from MDNA...at least in Latin America. No word yet about the rest of the world. Apparently, there will also be a contest for Brazilian graphic designers to create the cover of a limited edition CD. Here's a translation of the article:

" Attention, Graphic designers! Madonna is eyeing a Brazilian professional to design the cover for her new single, SUPERSTAR, to be launched later this year.

It is a partnership between the whiskey brand Johnnie Walker to mount a workshop at the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS) in São Paulo for 30 students. The course will be curated by art director Giovanni Bianco, and registrations expire on the 19th in the museum's website. Each professional will be asked to create a cover.

In December, when she brings her MDNA tour to the country, Madonna will choose the work that will be used for a limited edition CD. "What attracted me to the project is the opportunity to inspire a generation of Brazilian artists to progress in the creative field," says the singer.

What do we think about "Superstar" as a single? Would it be a good choice for the U.S.A. as well? The song has already received some promotion this year as the theme to Bravo TV's promotional campaign.  Stay tuned...

"Turn Up The Radio" On The Club Play Chart, Week 9

"Turn Up The Radio" manages another week inside the Club Play Top 10 in next week's issue (dated September 29th) as it falls from #6 to #10.

Good news and bad news this week: The good news is that MDNA enjoys a nice jump back into the Top 10 of the Dance / Electronic Albums chart and is also bulleted, no doubt aided by the start of the North American leg of her tour. The bad news is that "Turn Up The Radio" falls off both the Singles Sales and Dance / Electronic Singles Sales charts.

"Turn Up The Radio" Gets 4 AC Radio Adds This Week

A bit of good news this week as "Turn Up The Radio" gets added by 4 AC radio stations:

KWAV-FM (Monterey, Calif.)
WDEF-FM (Chattanooga, Tenn.)
WJKK-FM (Jackson, Miss.)
WRSA-FM (Huntsville, Ala.)

This comes two weeks ahead of the song's scheduled September 25th radio add date. The unusual thing is that it was added by AC radio stations, when apparently there isn't an AC radio add date (yet). The September 25th date is for Top 40 radio. It's definitely a good sign that these 4 AC stations decided to add the song on their own! Let's hope this trend continues.

"Turn Up The Radio" On The Club Play Chart, Week 8

We've got an early look at this week's Club Play chart (Issue date 9/22/12) where "Turn Up The Radio" holds at #6 for a second week. This marks its sixth week inside the Top 10. It's also interesting to note that Usher's "Scream", which replaced "Turn Up The Radio" at #1 last week, has taken a larger tumble than Madonna and is now below her at #8.
