Santa Baby (1987)

FORMATS: Compilation Album Track
HISTORY AND NOTES:
Madonna's version of "Santa Baby" was recorded and released in 1987 as part of the all-star Very Special Christmas compilation album. Although it was never promoted, "Santa Baby" still receives airplay during the holiday season. Fifteen years later in 2002, the track made its first chart appearance when it landed on the Hot 100 Recurrent Singles chart where it peaked at #24.

Note: There is some confusion regarding "Santa Baby" on this chart. According to the Billboard.biz archives, the track supposedly spent 3 non-consecutive weeks on this chart. The first 2 weeks are unknown as they mysteriously do not appear in Billboard's archives.

Contributor Maurice Gravelle has a possible theory on the "Santa Baby" Holiday confusion:

[Billboard.biz] states Santa Baby charted for 3 weeks on Hot Holiday Songs and peaked at #24 ... previously, Santa Baby peaked at #24 for only 1 week on 2 charts: Hot 100 Singles Recurrent (2002) and Adult Contemporary Holiday Tracks (2003). So I'm wondering if both these entries were not combined into the Hot Holiday Songs chart??? and then it re-entered at #49, so that would make it 3 weeks total. It's hard to say.

Note: "Santa Baby"'s run on this chart is not quite clear due to conflicting reports. Online Billboard.biz archives show a December 24, 2011 debut date and a peak position of #24 with a total of 3 weeks on the chart prior to its re-entry on December 26, 2015. However, a separate source claims that there was only a 1-week chart entry for "Santa Baby" on this chart prior to December 26, 2015 which was at #49 on 12/26/2011.

  1. Just a note: The newer Holiday Songs chart- which debuted in 2011- is a Hot-100-like chart for holiday tracks (based on airplay, sales and streaming).

  3. Just a note- on the chart titled Hot Holiday SOngs,it shows SB's peak as No. 24 (the No. 49 re-entry was its third week on that chart).

The newer chart apparently is titled just "Holiday Songs." I know, confusing. hehe The Hot Holiday Songs, I believe, is based only on airplay at AC radio.

    1. Actually, if you try looking for each week's results for the Hot Holiday Songs chart, it only brings up the one week for 2011. It's a bit of a hot mess with these multiple holiday charts in the archives.

  4. Yeah this is a bit confusing. Do you happen to know the other 2 weeks for Santa Baby on Hot Holiday Songs?

  6. The 50-position Hot Holiday Songs chart that debuted in 2011 would be one of note, IMO. It logged two weeks on the chart, hitting No. 44 (late 2011). I'm still not sure what the other one's about, or if it combined weeks for something else, etc.
