Erotica (1992)
FORMATS: 7" Vinyl, 12" Vinyl, Cassette Single, Cassette Maxi-Single, CD Single, CD Maxi-Single
HISTORY AND NOTES: "Erotica" was the title track and first single from Madonna's fifth studio album, 1992's Erotica.
This was Madonna's first single to be released as a 5" 2-Track CD Single in the USA. Various remixes were spread out over all the commercial formats. There was also an alternate version of the song called "Erotic", which consisted of alternate lyrics and was featured on a CD that accompanied Madonna's infamous Sex book that was released around the same time. An edit of this version was also included on the "Erotica" promo CD.
Unfortunately, this was the first lead single from a Madonna album to not go to #1 on the Hot 100 since her debut in 1983. The song did go Top 5, however, and did go to #1 on the Dance charts. It also managed to accomplish a feat that has never been broken to this day: It was and still is the highest-ever debuting song on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart at #2. "Erotica" went on to be featured on 2001's GHV2 and 2009's Celebration compilations.
