Don't Cry For Me Argentina (1996)

FORMATS: 12" Vinyl, CD Maxi-Single

HISTORY AND NOTES:
"Don't Cry For Me Argentina" was the second single released from 1996's Evita soundtrack. While the song appeared as a ballad on the album, radio was treated to a newly re-recorded dance version.

Originally, there were no plans to release a commercial single for the track in the USA, but the record company realized what a success the song turned out to be on the radio and finally released a maxi-single in early 1997 (the rest of the world had received it in late 1996). This marked the first instance since 1983's "Burning Up" that a Madonna single was only released in maxi formats in the USA.  No 7" or 2-track CD was issued.

The chart success of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" is credited mostly to the dance remix which really took off and exploded onto airwaves and dance clubs. The commercial maxi-singles were released a little late though. Had they been out sooner to coincide with the song's airplay peak, "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" could have reached higher than #8 on the Hot 100. The remix did reach #1 in the clubs, though. This song was chosen to be included on 2001's GHV2 hits album, interestingly in its original ballad version instead of the hit dance mix.
