Express Yourself (1989)

FORMATS: 7" Vinyl, 12" Vinyl, Cassette Single

HISTORY AND NOTES: "Express Yourself" was the second single released from Madonna's 1989 album, Like A Prayer.

The 7" and cassette singles featured a new 7" Remix of the song. This version stayed faithful to the album version, but with a little more polish on the production. The 12" vinyl featured extended remixes by Shep Pettibone. Also available on the promo CD was a shorter Remix/Edit version of the Non-Stop Express Mix, which was popular on radio at the time. All commercial formats were backed by the Who's That Girl soundtrack cut "The Look Of Love"

"Express Yourself" scored Top 5 positions on several charts, settling for #2 on the Hot 100 (where it stayed for 2 weeks), but it did reach #1 on the Maxi-Singles Sales and Club Play charts and was also certified Gold. Variations of the main dance remix by Shep Pettibone were the versions chosen to be included on both 1990's The Immaculate Collection and 2009's Celebration compilations instead of the album version or the 7" Remix.

  1. Interestingly, "Express Yourself"- like "Material Girl" and "Cherish"- reached No. 1 on the Cashbox chart.
