Hung Up (2005)

HISTORY AND NOTES:
2003's American Life was Madonna's lowest-selling studio album of all-time. There was a great anticipation to see what she would do for her next album, and if she could make a comeback. 2005's Confessions On A Dance Floor's first single was "Hung Up", an all-out disco stomper that featured a sample of the Abba song "Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)".

"Hung Up" was released on both CD Maxi and 12" Vinyl maxi formats, but was also released as a digital download. This was truly Madonna's first major release of the iTunes era.

Unfortunately, there was a lot of reluctance by the bigger radio stations in the nation to play the track. On the other hand, it was a big success in terms of digital sales, and since Billboard now allowed digital sales to be counted towards a song's position on the Hot 100, "Hung Up" made a big climb on the chart to land at a #7 peak. This was Madonna's first Top 10 hit since "Die Another Day" in 2002 and at the time tied her with Elvis Presley for being the artists with the most Top 10 hits, with 36 each. "Hung Up" also became one of Madonna's biggest dance hits ever, spending an impressive 4 weeks at #1 on the Club Play chart (17 weeks total, tying "Everybody" and "Holiday"/"Lucky Star" for being the Madonna singles with the most weeks on the chart). The song also ruled the Dance Radio Airplay chart for several weeks as well. This was also Madonna's first entry on the then-newly formed Pop 100 and Pop 100 Airplay charts. "Hung Up" was included on Madonna's 2009 greatest hits album, Celebration.
