Lucky Star (1984)
FORMATS: 7" Vinyl
HISTORY AND NOTES: There were originally no plans to release a fifth single from the Madonna album, but after the success of "Borderline", Sire Records decided to release "Lucky Star" as the final single, even though Madonna had already finished recording her next album, Like A Virgin. "Lucky Star" had already been promoted to clubs the previous Fall along with "Holiday", where both titles had reached #1 on the Club Play chart, and an extended mix had also been used as a B-Side to the "Borderline" 12".
Commercially, only a 7" vinyl was issued in a plain white die-cut sleeve, which featured the Edit of the song, as well as the album cut "I Know It". Since the extended remix had already been released on the "Borderline" maxi, a 12" single was not issued.
Chart wise, Madonna sailed into the Top 5 of the Hot 100 for the first time with "Lucky Star", where it peaked at #4. "Lucky Star" would later go on to be featured on Madonna's first greatest hits album The Immaculate Collection as well as 2009's compilation album, Celebration.

Hi, the AC chart run: 42-37-36-32-25-21-19-19-24-27-35.
ReplyDeleteHi! Thanks for this great resource...we've added your link on our blog. Not sure if you're able to shed any light on this, but I was wondering whether Lucky Star would have been ineligible to chart on the Dance/Club Play chart again when it was released as the album's 5th single due to the fact that it had already charted as a double A-side with Holiday? I would assume that it must have received a substantial amount of club play in mid-1984, considering the extended remix wasn't released until the Borderline single came out. I'm not sure whether rules prevented it from charting again.
ReplyDeleteHi, I actually don't know the answer to that but I would guess it was just because it had charted already and maybe the clubs were over it after having played it months before.
