Hollywood (2003)
FORMATS: Double 12" Vinyl, CD Maxi-Single
HISTORY AND NOTES:
"Hollywood" was the second single from 2003's American Life album. After the experimental nature of the previous single, "American Life", "Hollywood" seemed like a safe return to a more accessible pop song for radio.
"American Life" had marked the end of the USA 2-Track CD single, as "Hollywood" was only released on CD Maxi and 12" Vinyl formats.
The release of "Hollywood" turned out to be a major disappointment in that it was Madonna's first single since "Burning Up"/"Physical Attraction" in 1983 to not chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Radio airplay was low and it didn't help that a 2-track CD single was not released to boost sales. The backlash from the controversy surrounding the "American Life" song and video probably contributed to radio's hesitation to play "Hollywood" as well. The only airplay-based chart that "Hollywood" appeared on was the Adult Top 40 chart where it peaked at #35. On the bright side, it did hit #1 on Dance Singles Sales chart and was Madonna's 30th #1 on the Club Play chart. Although the song was not really a hit, it was included on Madonna's 2009 greatest hits album, Celebration.
