Oh Father (1989)

FORMATS: 7" Vinyl, Cassette Single

HISTORY AND NOTES: Madonna ended the 80's by releasing the fourth single from Like A Prayer, "Oh Father" ("Dear Jessie" was released as the fourth single in most European countries instead of "Oh Father").

The single was released on both 7" vinyl and cassette singles, backed with the Like A Prayer album track "Pray For Spanish Eyes" on the b-side. The 7" vinyl of "Oh Father" was Madonna's first since the "Lucky Star" 7" in 1984 to not be released in a picture sleeve. Instead, it was issued in a plain white die-cut sleeve.

"Oh Father" was Madonna's first stumble on the charts since she hit the Top 10 with "Borderline" 5 years earlier. Although it did reach a respectable #20 on the Hot 100, "Oh Father" broke Madonna's streak of 17 consecutive Top 10 singles, a record that no one has yet matched or broken. Oddly enough, Adult Contemporary totally ignored this ballad. "Oh Father" is also one of Madonna's more forgotten singles of the 80's, although it was included on 1995's Something To Remember ballads collection.
