Who's That Girl (1987)
FORMATS: 7" Vinyl, 12" Vinyl, Cassette Single, Cassette Maxi-Single
HISTORY AND NOTES: "Who's That Girl" was released in the Summer of 1987 as the first single from the soundtrack to Madonna's film of the same name. Madonna had contributed 4 songs to the soundtrack and this was the first of its two singles.
This was Madonna's first single to be released in other formats besides vinyl, in this case, cassettes. All formats were backed with the True Blue album track "White Heat" (which had curiously already been used as a B-side for "Open Your Heart"). The maxi formats featured the Extended Version of "Who's that Girl" as well as a Dub version, which was strangely not listed on the outer tracklistings of either the 12" vinyl or maxi-cassette.
"Who's That Girl" was Madonna's sixth #1 single on the Hot 100. It also hit #1 on the Singles Sales and Airplay charts, and was another Top 5 on the Adult Contemporary chart. The remix wasn’t very strong in the clubs and only spent 2 weeks on the Club Play chart, peaking at #44. "Who's That Girl" was Madonna's only #1 hit to not be included on 1990's The Immaculate Collection greatest hits album. It was, however, later included on 2009's Celebration retrospective.
