Angel / Into The Groove (1985)

(Front cover of the 12" featured "Angel", Back cover featured "Into The Groove")

FORMATS: 7" Vinyl, 12" Vinyl

HISTORY AND NOTES: "Angel" was the third single from the Like A Virgin album and Madonna's fifth Top 5 hit. Unfortunately, "Angel" tends to be one of Madonna's more overlooked hits from the 80's. Part of the reason for this might be that its B-Side ("Into The Groove") would turn out to be one of the biggest hits of Madonna's career, even though it was not a proper single in its own right (except overseas).

"Angel" was commercially released in both 7" and 12" vinyl formats. The 7" featured the album Edit of "Angel" (which was just an early fade) as well as the Dance Mix Edit, while the 12" featured the full-length Extended Dance Mix as well as the non-album song "Into The Groove". "Into The Groove" was being featured in the film Desperately Seeking Susan, in which Madonna had also appeared. At the time, the song was not featured on the soundtrack, so the only way to obtain "Into The Groove" was on the "Angel" 12" vinyl.

Popularity of "Into The Groove" allowed it to appear on several Billboard charts either alongside or in place of "Angel", except on the Hot 100 where "Angel" charted by itself. "Into The Groove" is definitely Madonna's biggest hit to have never charted on the Billboard Hot 100. With "Into The Groove" on the B-Side, sales of the 12" vinyl propelled both tracks to the #1 spot on the Maxi-Singles Sales chart. "Into The Groove" also received enough R&B airplay to make an appearance on the R&B Singles chart hitting the Top 20. In 1987, "Into The Groove" was featured on Madonna's remix album You Can Dance; in 1990 it was featured on The Immaculate Collection; and in 2009 it was featured on Madonna's career-spanning retrospective album Celebration. "Angel" has yet to be featured on any of Madonna's compilation albums.

Note: "Into The Groove" charted on Hot R&B Singles Sales due to its inclusion on the "Angel" 12" Vinyl. For some reason, "Angel" was not listed on this chart entry even though it was the A-Side on the commercial single. This was probably because "Into The Groove" was the bigger R&B hit and R&B-based record stores reported their sales as such to Billboard.

  1. Also of note:

    * Six weeks at No. 1 on Variety's Singles Sales chart (while "Angel" charted separately)
    * No. 6 peak on Radio & Records' CHR/Pop airplay chart (which was nearly interchangeable with Billboard's airplay chart at the time)

  2. The 3 missing weeks for Angel at AC chart: 33-37-39.
